Curriculum Protocol - Courses Not Taught in 5+ Years

Type: Definitions
Effective Date: 8/10/2025

Courses Not Taught in 5+ Years

The academic catalog is a comprehensive and authoritative resource that outlines all official academic requirements for the university. The catalog should display active, regularly taught courses that support degree program requirements. The academic catalog currently displays over 5,000 active courses, including University Course lines. To maintain accuracy and provide the most up-to-date information, the following is proposed:

  • Annual reports will be sent to associate deans listing courses that have not been taught in five (5) or more years.
    • A list of impacted plans will also be reviewed.
  • Courses that have not been taught in the past five (5) years but which the college wishes to retain in the active course catalog require justification. This justification must be submitted in a memo from the dean to the Office of Curriculum, Assessment, and General Studies.
  • Courses that are not requested to remain on the active course list will be inactivated. The course will not be available for scheduling and will not be viewable in the academic catalog.
  • Courses that have been inactivated may be eligible for reactivation, provided that the only course details being changed are classified as being fast track eligible. The course may then proceed through the curricular process on the fast track agenda. See NAU Policy 200352: Curriculum Protocols: Fast Track Policy.

Tentative Timeline

  • Each fall, a list of courses that have not been taught in five (5) years will be sent to the associate deans.
  • Justification to keep a course active must be received before the deadline for Review Period 2 curriculum materials.
  • In February, a list of the courses that remain on the inactivation list will be sent to the associate deans, chairs, and schedule of classes coordinators. The list of courses to be inactivated will be included on the Review Period 2 curriculum agenda.
  • The finalized list of courses to be inactivated will be submitted to the catalog editor for removal from the next academic catalog.
