In areas of study in which the subject matter changes rapidly, if you have taken some courses long before you graduate, that material may have become obsolete or irrelevant in the meantime. Therefore, it is up to your major department to decide whether you can use coursework taken more than eight years ago to meet degree requirements for graduation.

Your department may accept such coursework, reject it, request that you revalidate its substance, or request that you take current coursework to meet plan requirements. (This eight-year limit applies except when plan-accreditation agencies limit the life of the coursework to less than eight years.)

Your major department may also require that you satisfy current major requirements rather than those in earlier catalogs if completing the earlier requirements is no longer possible or educationally sound.
