Requirements for Baccalaureate Degrees

To receive a bachelor’s degree at Northern Arizona University, you must complete at least 120 units of credit. Within those total units, you must complete:

A.

All of Northern Arizona University’s liberal studies, diversity, junior-level writing, and capstone requirements.

B.

All requirements for your specific academic plan(s).

C.

At least 30 units of upper-division courses, which may include transfer work.

D.

At least 30 units of coursework taken through Northern Arizona University, of which at least 18 must be upper-division courses (300 level or above). This requirement is not met by credit-by-exam, retro-credits, transfer coursework, etc.

E.

A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 on all work attempted at Northern Arizona University.

General Statement of Requirements

To receive a bachelor’s degree at Northern Arizona, you must complete a least 120 units of credit that minimally includes a major, all of Northern Arizona University's liberal studies, diversity, junior-level writing, and capstone requirements, minimum cumulative GPA, and other restrictions on units.

Some academic degree programs also require you to select an emphasis within your major. Additionally, many academic degree programs have additional requirements such as minor(s) or certificate(s) that you must complete. Students also may elect to pursue additional minors or certificates beyond the requirements of their degree programs.

Process for Requesting Substitutions or Waivers

If you wish to request a substitution for a requirement in your major or minor, including capstone and junior-level writing requirement, or request to have a major or minor requirement waived, such changes must be approved by your advisor, the chair of your department, and the associate dean of your college or school.

This University Requirement Waiver form should be completed by an academic advisor when a student is requesting to waive a University requirement related to Liberal Studies, Diversity, Junior-level writing, or Capstone.

What Will Not Be Waived

Other university-level requirements will not be waived, nor modified. This specifically includes:

  • At least 120 units for a bachelor's degree;
  • 30-units of upper-division... (Item C, above);
  • 30 units through NAU... (Item D, above); and
  • 2.0 cumulative GPA... (Item E, above).

Please be aware that we cannot make changes to your undergraduate record after your baccalaureate degree has been awarded.
