Curriculum Protocols: Cross-Listing Courses
Cross-Listing: Refers to the same course taught with different departmental prefixes (e.g., the Race and Ethnic Relations course is listed as both SOC 215 and ES 215).
Permanently Cross-Listing Courses
Cross-listing typically occurs when courses are team-taught (two teachers teaching at the same time in the same class section), across different departments, when courses are taught by different departments in different years, or when multiple prefixes are required by accreditation or endorsement requirements.
- The cross-listed courses must be at the same level (e.g., 300/300, 400/400, etc.).
- Where possible, the cross-listed courses should have the same number (e.g., GLG 259 and GSP 259, or ES 356 and POS 356).
- There must be one syllabus utilized for the cross-listed courses, and the syllabus must display both courses.
One-Time Cross-Listing Courses
One-time cross-listed course approvals may be granted by the Associate Vice Provost for Curriculum, Assessment, and General Studies as specified below. One-time approvals are normally sought when the courses are not taught together on a permanent basis. The criteria listed in the policy for Permanently Cross-Listing Courses apply in these situations.
Requests for one-time cross-listing should be made during the schedule building phase for each term, and before the actual submission due date. Units should allow 7-10 days processing time for review/approval.
The class meeting times should not be scheduled together until they have received a one-time approval.
Permanently Cross-Listing Courses
The college-level curriculum committee must approve all courses requesting cross-listing.
The courses must be submitted to the respective committees on the appropriate curricular request form and include the following:
- A single syllabus listing both prefixes and course numbers.
- Written justification for the cross-listing.
One-Time Cross-Listing Courses
One-time cross-listing requests for undergraduate-level courses go directly to the Vice Provost for Curriculum, Assessment, and General Studies, with Registrar.ScheduleofClasses@nau.edu copied.
Cross-listing requests for graduate-level courses go directly to the Associate Vice Provost of Graduate Studies, with Registrar.ScheduleofClasses@nau.edu copied. If the one-time cross-listing request is approved, the faculty will be notified.
One-time cross-listing requests for undergraduate- and graduate-level courses should be sent to the email specified above and include the following:
- A single syllabus listing both prefixes and course numbers.
- Written justification for the one-time cross-listing.
