POLICY STATEMENT
Continuing education for Registered Nurses (RNs) and Medical Assistants (MAs) is an important component of patient care.

DEFINITIONS

POLICY
1. Campus Health Services (CHS) RNs and MAs are encouraged to demonstrate a minimum of sixteen (16) hours of continuing education annually. These may be attained through:
a. Educational programs or presentations offered through CHS or NAU
b. Formal, professional healthcare-related conferences, seminars, or workshops
c. Approved online educational opportunities offered through professional nursing or medical assisting organizations
2. Educational hours should be directly related to the type of work performed.
3. For RNs, formal nursing continuing education units (CEUs) are preferred, but not required.
4. Anyone attending a formal, outside educational opportunity is encouraged to present what they have learned to the rest of the RN and MA staff.
5. Any RN or MA holding a certification in their designated role is responsible for maintaining the educational requirements of their certifying agency in accordance to that agency’s expectations, in addition to, or in conjunction with, CHS expectations.
6. Reimbursement of expenses for registration, lodging, transportation, and meals will be addressed on an individual basis in accordance with NAU policy and CHS policy ADMIN12 (Travel Reimbursement).
