POLICY STATEMENT
Preventive Maintenance is maintenance that is regularly performed on equipment (on a specified schedule) to ensure that it is functioning properly and lessen the likelihood of its failure. This maintenance is done while the equipment is already in good working order and is not, necessarily, done to fix or repair problems (unless they are identified during the inspection). Also known as planned maintenance or scheduled maintenance.
REASON FOR THIS POLICY
To ensure that all equipment impacting patient care is inspected annually and maintained in good working order.

POLICY
1. Routine preventive maintenance is scheduled annually:
a. Biomedical equipment will be serviced by a biomedical company contracted with Campus Health Services (CHS) for this purpose.
b. Instruments used for minor surgical procedures will be serviced and sharpened on-site by a contracted professional mobile instrument sharpening service.
2. Maintenance is usually scheduled during the summer months when patient volume and equipment use is likely to be low.
3. All medical equipment used in the medical services area will be inspected and serviced as necessary.
4. All inspected equipment will be labeled by the biomedical technician with the company’s name, contact information, and date.
5. If any equipment is found to be in need of repair, the Director of Nursing will be notified and arrangements will be made to have the equipment serviced.
6. Should any equipment need to be removed from CHS for repair, arrangements will be made for the use of a loaned device.
7. Should any equipment need to be removed from CHS for repair, it will be disinfected and cleaned prior to leaving (per routine equipment cleaning procedure).
