This explains the reason for and process for using interpreting services.
Reason For This Policy
Recognizing that some patients of Campus Health Services are not able to communicate sufficiently in English to facilitate an accurate assessment of their health problems CHS has contracted with an outside interpreting service to provide patient interpretation services by telephone. Services are currently provided by InSync Interpreters. Interpretation in 190 languages is available 24 hours a day 365 days a year.

Definitions
An interpreteris an active participant in a cross-cultural/lingual interaction, assisting the provider in understanding the beliefs and practices of the client's culture and assisting the client in understanding the dominant culture, by providing culturalas well as linguistic links.
Policy
Campus Health will maintain a contract to provide interpreting services to be used by an staff member when needed.
Responsibilities
Chief of Operations will maintain the contract with an interpreting service company.
Procedures
Providers may access interpreting services via any telephone using the dual handset kit assembled for portable use. Provider may also choose to use a speaker phone in their office. Confidentiality must be maintained.
Services are accessed by dialing 866-501-2002. Provide the coordinator for interpreting with the facility name (Campus Health Services @ Northern Arizona University), language requested, provider name, and contact phone number.
Interpreting Tips include:
Use relatively short statements.
Allow time for the interpreter to speak.
Don’t carry on side conversations with anyone.
Remember that interpreters will interpret your emotion, tone, style and pace.
Interpreting service maintains a quality control system and accepts feedback either on-line, by fax, a call to our representative, or a direct call back to the toll-free number.
